Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The doctors, who had earlier proposed a State-wide strike on Wednesday to press for the implementation of a law to protect hospitals and doctors from mob attacks, have decided to defer their strike for the time being. The Joint Action Council of Doctors for Hospital-Patient Protection Law, comprising doctors' outfits from public and private sectors and the Indian Medical Association, decided to call off the strike temporarily following a written assurance from Health Minister P. K. Sreemathy that the government would enact a law to protect hospitals in a time-bound manner, a leader of the Joint Action Council said on Tuesday. The Council leaders had held discussions with Ms. Sreemathy on Monday, before she left on a foreign tour. The doctors had been on a State-wide campaign demanding that the government implement a law to protect hospitals and doctors from attacks by mobs, by making such attacks a non-bailable offence. Hunger strike They had also launched a relay hunger strike in front of the Secretariat on June 24 to press for their demands, which was to have culminated in the State-wide strike on June 30. However, Ms. Sreemathy had assured the doctors that she had the concurrence of the Chief Minister and the Home Minister that the law would be implemented in a time-bound manner in the State, Joint Council leaders claimed.
