Karunanidhi visits the library of Central Institute of Classical Tamil

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday visited the library of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil in the old Assembly chamber at Fort St. George.

K. Ramasamy, officer in-charge of the Institute, said the Chief Minister, also the chairperson of the Institute, advised the authorities to ensure that the library became an important reference institution.

At present, the library had a collection of around 30,000 titles. In about 10 days, the number of collections might go up to one lakh. “However, we are attaching a greater importance to quality than quantity,” he said.

Among the present collections were books on Sanskrit. It was planned to collect books on other classical languages so that a comparative study of different classical languages could be made.

In tune with the heritage character of the chamber, wooden furniture would be used.

For the time being, steel racks were being utilised for keeping the books.

During his visit, the Chief Minister also instructed the Institute authorities to modify the library's name. Accordingly, he wanted the library to be called ‘Chemmozhi Tamilaaivu Noolagam,' Prof. Ramasamy said, adding that this had been carried out.

Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Chief Secretary K.S. Sripathi were present during the visit.
