Gehlot asks Pranab for release of crop insurance share

JAIPUR: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has asked Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to facilitate release of the Centre's share in crop insurance. “The Rajasthan farmers are deprived of the benefit of crop insurance as the Centre has not yet released its share,” he told Mr. Mukherjee on the sidelines of a conference of Chief Ministers in Mumbai.
Mr. Gehlot said he had written a letter in the past to Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar but it did not elicit any result. “The farmers in the State are yet to get the claims for even the previous kharif and the non-payment is due to the Centre not contributing its share,” he pointed out.
The Chief Minister told Mr. Mukherjee that the State Government had kept a provision of Rs.660 crore in the current Budget for crop insurance.
However, as the Centre's share had not been remitted, the farmers were not paid their claims which amounted to Rs.1,262 crore.
“I have come to know that the Centre has paid all other States,” Mr. Gehlot said requesting the Union Finance Ministry to coordinate with the Union Agriculture Ministry.
