Raghavulu flays government on Indiramma housing bills

Staff Reporter

Five persons launch indefinite fast on the issue

Guntur: CPI (M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu on Wednesday criticized the government for keeping the Indiramma housing bills pending in spite of repeated pleas by the beneficiaries while releasing huge sums due to contractors for executing various projects. The government would cite fund crunch as the reason for not clearing housing bills under the Indiramma. It was strange that the government did not feel constrained by paucity of funds in clearing the dues of contractors. This showed the lack of commitment to welfare of poor people who could only silently bear the injustices meted to them, he said.

Addressing a gathering of party activists and people at Rajupalem in the district after inaugurating the camp of indefinite hunger strike launched by five persons in protest against the inordinate delay in the clearance of pending bills under the Indiramma scheme, Mr. Raghavulu said Congress leaders themselves were indulging in corruption even as the Chief Minister cried hoarse that the government had its coffers emptied. The CPI (M) would not remain silent if the shady deals went unchecked.

Word of caution

Mr. Raghavulu expressed solidarity with the people at Rajupalem who vowed to keep the agitation even if the police forcibly made them to give up their stir. The party would not tolerate police excesses in such instances.

Centre of Indian Trade Unions district vice-president D. Ramadevi said that the district officials concerned were indifferent to the problems faced by the beneficiaries of Indiramma scheme.

They were unmoved by the plight of the poor who were asking for nothing more than basic amenities.
