IPS officer honoured by US

HYDERABAD: In recognition of his work in the fight against trafficking in persons, Inspector-General of Andhra Pradesh Police, CID, S. Umapathi was honoured by the U.S. government here on Wednesday.

On behalf of the U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, the U.S. Embassy Charge d'Affaires Steven White presented a memento to the IPS officer at a brief ceremony at the U.S. Consulate General here. He is the first Indian government official to be honoured for the key role he played in rescuing victims.

The U.S. Department of State's office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons (TIP) named Mr. Umapathi in its 2010 report as a TIP Hero.
