CHENNAI: Services' Sandeep Bagri showed no mercy on Haider Ali of West Bengal as he won the contest 6-0 in the first round of the Atlas Power India-National junior boxing championship for boys in a make-shift roof just outside the Nehru Indoor Stadium.

There wasn't any doubt about Sandeep's aggressive intent. The moment the bell struck for the start of the first round, Sandeep, in red trunks, wasted no time in landing punches on Haider, who was content defending.

Sandeep took a 4-0 lead in the first round with nice left-right combination punches. Effective jabs aided by nimble footwork were the features of Sandeep's victory.

Contrastingly, Diwakar Raju of Sikkim didn't stretch himself too much. He bobbed and weaved and landed strong punches to defeat Danistar Marwain of Meghalaya 7-4.

Close round

Danistar, in red, seemed very energetic as he kept attacking Diwakar, but the latter was quick to move out of harm's way. It was a close first round that went in Diwakar's favour 2-1.

Diwakar asserted his supremacy in the second, landing point-making punches. Towards the end of the third round, Danistar slowed down as he looked to wait and go for a cross or a hook, but Diwakar blocked well and punched to the satisfaction of a majority of the scoring officials.

Earlier, at the inaugural function, A.K. Karunakaran, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Boxing Association, requested Satyabrata Sahoo, Member Secretary, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, to find a permanent place for boxing activities.

Sahoo said he would find a place either at the Nehru Indoor Stadium campus or at the Nehru Stadium.

The results (first round): V. Manikandan (Pon) lost to Ganendra Sharma (MP) (RSC, 2nd round); Danistar Marwain (Meg) lost to Diwakar Raj (Skm) 4-7; Sandeep Bagri (SSCB) bt Haider Ali (WB) 6-0; Nawjot Singh (Pun) bt Manish Sahu (Cht) 20-2; Laltu Gorai (Jhr) lost to Kamal MV Jahid (Goa) 6-7; Gyanendra Singh (Raj) lost to Zotlankima (Miz) 3-6; Ajua Ayyamma (Ker) lost to Shadab Ali (UP) 4-4 tied at the end of three rounds (4-1 being the judges verdict) .
