IMPHAL: Doctors and officials of The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal, a central government medical college, staged a two-hour sit-in on Tuesday, protesting the death threats from rebels, trying to extort money from them.
Recently some doctors of the Radiotherapy department were asked to pay staggering amounts as illegal tax. This has forced many of them to go on extended leave.
A woman rebel, who delivered an extortion letter and later came to demand the money, has been arrested by the police. The rebels demanded that the doctor secure her release or face death. Medical Superintendent Y. Mohen said doctors stay away from work fearing reprisals.
W. Gyaneshwar, Director, said doctors are there to serve people, and should not be harassed.
Violent incidents in the medical college have forced the authorities to post CRPF guards round-the-clock. There have also been instances of officials being kidnapped, and a bomb explosion on the campus.
