City archer on a roll

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: Fourteen-year-old city archer Ritul Chatterjee is on a roll at the Asian archery championship in Chinese Taipei. Representing the Indian compound team, Ritul, along with fellow archers Sridhar and Ratan Singh, helped Team India finish on top in the qualifying round of the double 70 event on Wednesday.

Andhra Pradesh Archery Association vice-president and Volga Archery Academy chairman Ch. Satyanarayana said Ritul had hauled 700 points out of 720.

‘Stupendous show'

“Considering his age, this is a stupendous performance. This is an Asian record. He is shaping well and hitting the bull's eye with perfection. His hard work and dedication have helped him emerge as a top archer. He is sure of sealing his place in the Indian team for the Commonwealth Games,” Mr. Satyanarayana said.

Ritul will be taking part in the Olympic round on Thursday and his coach Lenin is sure of a repeat-feat by the teenager. “He is using my bow, which is the best in the world. He won medals at the earlier Asian tourneys held in Malaysia and Thailand,” said Mr. Lenin.

Young Ritul, a native of Varanasi, has settled down in Vijayawada and is a trainee at the Volga Archery Academy.
