Rally against drug abuse
Staff Reporter
Tirupur: The Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) along with the District Police observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking-2010 with an awareness rally and seminar in the city on Wednesday.
The events were on the theme of ‘Think health, not drugs' to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society.
The awareness rally, taken out by students along the arterial roads in the city, was flagged off by Deputy Inspector General of Police (Coimbatore range) Bala Naga Devi in the presence of Superintendent of Police A. Arun and NIB Deputy Superintendent of Police K. Ramasamy.
NIB Inspector D. Vijayakumar said that the goal of the campaign was to mobilize support and inspire people to act against drug abuse.
According to United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, nearly 200 million people are using illicit drugs such as cocaine, cannabis, hallucinogens, opiates and sedative hypnotics worldwide with illicit drug trade estimated at more than $300 billion a year.
