Dazzling headlights a bane on Inner Ring Road

Too glaring: The height of the median on Inner Ring Road is as per standards, say NHAI officials. —

CHENNAI: Several motorists find it difficult to travel on the stretch of Inner Ring Road between Padi and Madhavaram at night as they have to endure the glare of dazzling headlights of oncoming vehicles.

They complain that the height of the median is relatively low and compounds the problem.

Badly maintained

B. Jagan, a resident of Villivakkam, said the high-beam headlights of oncoming vehicles, particularly heavy ones, affect visibility. The 1-km stretch from the Padi grade separator to the railway bridge lacks illumination as the streetlights are not maintained properly.

Motorists have to manage with poor lighting on the nearly five-km stretch from the bridge till the Madhavaram flyover.

Many of them opt for bright headlights owing to lack of illumination.

Accident prone

G. Sreedharan, a resident of Periyar Nagar, said accidents were increasingly becoming common.

Increasing the height of the median would help in preventing people from jumping over to cross the road.

Officials of National Highways Authority of India, however, said a concrete crash barrier was constructed on the arterial road as they are breach resistant. Its height of 1.5 m cannot be increased against the standard.

Poor lighting

On complaints about poor lighting, the officials said the local bodies were responsible for streetlight maintenance.

While the Chennai Corporation is maintaining the streetlights on the road from the railway bridge to Madhavaram flyover, the Ambattur municipality has to install streetlights from the Padi grade separator.

Officials in the civic bodies said there are proposals to improve lighting on the road.
