Save institution of Lokayukta, says Saldanha

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The former Karnataka High Court Judge M.F. Saldanha has called upon people to step up efforts to prevent the Government from destroying an institution such as the Lokayukta.

Talking to presspersons on Thursday, Mr. Saldanha said, “The Karnataka Lokayukta is the best Lokayukta in the country. N. Venkatachala worked for the institution and N. Santosh Hegde has taken it to a peak. Karnataka cannot afford to lose it. We should not allow the Government to destroy it.” Mr. Saldanha, who also heads the Karnataka chapter of the Transparency International, said Karnataka has been found to be the most corrupt southern State. In the last 24 months of the Bharatiya Janata Party Government, the per-capita corruption has risen from 49 per cent to 99 per cent. “This indicates there aren't many honest officials left in government,” he said.

“Mr. Hegde has been the finest judge. He has impeccable integrity. We cannot afford to lose him. He should continue to function for the remaining years of his tenure,” Mr. Saldanha.
