Kozhikode: Linguist from Edinburgh Ronald E. Asher has been selected for the Vaikom Mohammed Basheer memorial literary award instituted by Pravasi Doha. The award comprises Rs.50,001, a sculpture designed by Artist Namboothiri and citation. At a press conference here on Friday, Babu Mather, managing trustee of the Pravasi Trust, said Prof. Asher was selected for the award taking into account his effort to translate the celebrated works of Basheer into English. “The awards committee, chaired by writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair, had greatly appreciated the dedication shown by Prof. Asher to learn Malayalam and spread its fame across the globe,” he added. The award ceremony would be held in Kozhikode after fixing a convenient date in consultation with Prof. Asher, he added.
