PATHANAMTHITTA: The Devotees' Action Council staged a mass fast before the police station here on Friday demanding Crime Branch inquiry into the series of thefts at the Sree Mutharamman Kovil in the town. Tantri Samajom president Akkeeramon Kalidasa Bhattathiri inaugurated the fast. Addressing the meeting, action council leader M. Raju alleged that the police had taken an indifferent attitude towards the thefts at the temple. He also expressed deep concern over the five theft incidents at the temple situated hardly 100 metres away from the police station. Mr. Raju said the meeting expressed strong protest against the police who failed to book the culprits in any of the theft cases. Mr. Raju alleged that the number of thefts at places of worship belonging to different sections of the society was on the rise and that the police appeared to be slow in conducting proper investigations into it. The police machinery was groping in the dark at a time when burglars and other anti-social elements are at large in different parts of the district, he alleged. Mr. Raju said the action council would intensify the agitation if the government failed to take effective steps to protect the Hindu places of worship. P.N. Narendranathan Nair, treasurer of Nair Service Society, M.B. Unnikrishnan, Hindu Aikyavedi secretary in Kottayam, D. Ashok Kumar, Valanchuzhy Devaswom president, P. Padmakumar, SNDP Yogam taluk union president, A. Sureshkumar, municipal councilor, K.C. Ganapathi Pillai, Ooramman Kovil vice-president, V.C. Krishnan Achary, Mutharamman Temple Devaswom president and G. Vijayakumar, Hindu Aikyavedi leader, also spoke.
