Guntur: CPI(M) district secretary D Ramadevi has demanded that punitive action be taken against those who allegedly swindled nearly Rs 2 crore in National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) works in Rajupalem mandal. It is a fact established in the social audit and also by a team of Anti-Corruption Bureau but no action has been taken against the accused. The actual beneficiaries of NREGS did not have job cards in their possession. Some employees of the Postal Department were also allegedly involved in the scandal in addition to local politicians and middlemen. A sum of nearly Rs 20 lakh has been allegedly misappropriated in the construction of houses under Indiramma scheme in the same mandal. In spite of persistent agitation by CPI(M), action is not taken while the targeted sections continued to be deprived of the benefits due to them. The CPI(M) has submitted petitions to Collector B. Ramanjaneyulu demanding recovery of money and initiation of criminal proceedings against the village sarpanch and others who allegedly cheated the beneficiaries with impunity.
