Work at new airport terminal to be over by July: Collector

Special Correspondent

MADURAI: All works related to the new terminal at the Madurai airport will be completed by July 31, said Collector C. Kamaraj here on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters after releasing the draft electoral rolls for all the 10 Assembly constituencies, he replied to a pointed query that all major works had been completed at the new terminal. During a recent review of the works completed so far, senior airports authority officials had assured to get things done positively by July end and he hoped that there would not be any further delay.

Mr. Kamaraj said that there was an overwhelming response to the two-day special camp for inclusion of eligible applicants in the old-age-pension (OAP) scheme. Currently, the district extended old age pension to 87,500 persons. During the camp, officials received nearly 30,000 applications. After door-to-door scrutiny, the final list would be prepared, in which he expected the number to be around 15,000. Thus, the district would have approximately 1 lakh beneficiaries under the OAP scheme.

The recently concluded jamabandhi had received 16,000 applications, out of which, 9,000 were for patta transfers. Orders were being issued by the respective authorities and he hoped that there would not be any backlog. For those applicants who had sought transfers with joint pattas, it might take some time.

When his attention was drawn to the dumping of waste in many poromboke lands, Mr. Kamaraj said that some of the major hospitals would be roped in to segregate the waste. The residents of Melamadai had sought common dumping yard to be earmarked somewhere in Melamadai or Vandiyur.

After reviewing the performance of ‘uzhavar sandhais,' he said that it had been proposed to open the Anaiyur ‘sandhai' during evenings on an experimental basis as public and farmers preferred a change. Proposal to shift the Melur ‘uzhavar sandhai' to a better location from the present site had been sent to the government for approval, he replied.

Madurai Corporation Deputy Commissioner K. Tharpagaraj, Assistant Collector (Training) Venkatesh, PRO S.S. Saravanan were present.
