Guntur: Students Federation of India (SFI) activists laid siege to the office of Social Welfare Department here in protest against the delay in reopening student-managed hostels in the district. The group of activists led by SFI district secretary D Lenin staged a sit-in at the office after forcing the employees out. They demanded that the SW department should immediately reopen the mess. They later cooked food on the office premises as a token protest. They relented after Joint Director of Social Welfare Pothu Raju said the issue was under consideration of the Government. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Lenin found fault with the delay in reopening the hostels even a month after the colleges have been reopened. He also faulted the Government for allocating a lion's share of the budget to irrigation projects while neglecting welfare. He alleged that the Government was trying to do away with student - managed hostels in the future. SFI city secretary V Bhagwan Das said most students were forced to cook their own meals due to the delay in reopening of student - managed hostels.
