Integrated development plan for Thrikkakara drawn up

Staff Reporter

Programme envisages four major projects

Project under the aegis of Thrikkakara Residents' Associations Apex Council

KOCHI: The Thrikkakara Residents' Associations Apex Council (TRAAC), formed four years ago with the objective of formulating recommendations for the comprehensive development of Thrikkakara in consultation with resident associations in the region, has drawn up an integrated plan for the development the area into an industrial township.

The project, which was formally inaugurated by K. Babu, MLA, on Saturday mainly comprises four major projects – Thrikkakara Green City, Thrikkakara Clean City, Thrikkakara Safe City, and Thrikkakara Arts and Cultural Centre.

Of this, Thrikkakara Green City project aimed at countering the threat of global warming by following the theme of “one house, one tree” programme was inaugurated by Assistant Commissioner of Police P.M. Varghese.

“We have insisted that all members of residents' associations should plant a sapling in their house and if that was not possible, it should be done in a public place within the limit of the association concerned. It would not be a ‘plant and forget' programme but would be strictly evaluated on a monthly basis,” said M.S. Anil Kumar, general secretary of TRAAC. The project has the support of Nitta Gelatine India Limited.

The clean city project would be launched next month with the support of Y's Men International Midwest India Region District 5 under which Thrikkakara falls.

The immediate focus would be on shifting the dumping of waste near the Kakkanad bus stand to the solid waste treatment plant of the Kochi Corporation at Brahmapuram. Mr. Kumar said the Mayor had instructed the panchayat to do the needful in this regard.

“The only condition was that we ensure segregation of plastic and biodegradable waste. One thing we have learned from the present crisis on waste management is that segregation should take place at the household level itself rather than at a secondary level,” he said.

The idea was to find an alternative way, including the treatment unit developed by CREDAI, for the handling of biodegradable waste while disposing of plastic waste once in a week with the increased participation of Kudumbasree members.

The safe city project was aimed at setting up traffic signals at important points and to create awareness on regulations with the assistance of Lions Club Zone Two.

“We also plan to give training on safe driving to the drivers of taxis, autorickshaws and lorries plying through Thrikkakara. We are thinking of an arrangement in consultation with the RTO whereby those drivers who have not undergone the training were not allowed to drive,” Mr. Kumar said. IT companies, he said, could also help by not hiring such drivers.

Four months ago, an arts and cultural forum was formed for the implementation of the Thrikkakara Arts and Cultural Centre. The objective was to bring together people who had worked in the field of arts and culture and those interested in it for the promotion of the artistic and cultural sphere of the area.
