NAGAPATTINAM: A consultative meeting was organised here at the Collectorate on Saturday to discuss measures to maintain peace in the district. This was in view of the call for bandh on July 5 given by opposition parties to condemn the fuel price hike and to ascertain the extent of preparedness of the administrative apparatus. Presiding over the meeting, Collector C. Munianathan said adequate police protection would be provided to places such as hospitals, schools and bus stands. Further, 108-emergency ambulance service would function unhindered and so would government and private establishments and movie halls. All ration shops would stock adequate quantities of essential commodities, primarily rice, sugar and kerosene. All branches of State Bank of India would be provided with adequate protection. Over 13 inspectors, 96 sub-inspectors, 315 police personnel, and 50 armed personnel would function under the Superintendent of Police and two Deputy Superintendents of Police. Additionally, tahsildars, and Revenue Divisional Officers would be engaged to ensure smooth functioning of the administration. A. Annadurai, District Revenue Officer, was among those present at the meeting. Karur The AIADMK has urged the public and like-minded parties to voluntarily and wholeheartedly come out in support of the bandh.Speaking to the media here, the party district secretary and Karur MLA V. Senthil Balaji said that AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa has given the call for a general strike in the State, in support of the all-India general strike call given by the BJP to protest the ‘unwarranted and unjustified' hike in the price of petrol, diesel, kerosene and LPG cylinders. Besides the AIADMK, , the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and other parties would participate in the strike that is being resorted to in the larger interest of the people who would be put to great difficulty due to the price rise, he said. A similar meeting was convened by the CPI (M) where local leaders of the political parties discussed the means to make the bandh a successful one by highlighting the problems faced by the public in an effective manner.
