EC has no role in the arrests, says CEO

Special Correspondent

Explanation sought from Vijayashanti, T. Jayaprakash Reddy for ‘provocative remarks'

Any violation of model code of conduct will be dealt severely: Subba Rao

Plea to censor live coverage of Assembly proceedings forwarded to EC

HYDERABAD: Chief Electoral Officer I. V. Subba Rao has said that Election Commission and law enforcement agencies act independently in implementing laws for ensuring free and fair elections.

The Election Commission believed in implementation of existing laws and would take serious view of any violation of model code of conduct. It would give broad guidelines for maintaining law and order and it was the law enforcing agencies who would take action against specific persons under relevant sections, Mr. Subba Rao said.

He clarified that it was not correct to presume that the arrests of TRS MP Vijayashanti and Congress MLA T.Jayaprakash Reddy were ordered by the Commission. The EC had issued notice to MP Vijayashanti on Friday for making a provocative remark and sought her explanation by 11 a.m on Sunday. It also served a notice to MLA Jayaprakash Reddy on Saturday for his remarks at Siddipet and sought his explanation by Monday 11 a.m.

He said every political party was free to carry on a propaganda without creating hatred among different sections of people and inciting violence.

Asked about Telangana Jagruti president K. Kavitha's representation to censor live coverage of Assembly session proceedings in view of by-elections, Mr. Subba Rao said he had forwarded it to the Election Commission.

Six nominations

The CEO said that six nominations were filed on Saturday, four by TRS, one by TDP and one independent. They are Boda Janardhan (TDP) – Chennur (SC), Rotte Chakravarthi (IND)-Nizamabad (Urban), T. Ravinder Goud (TRS)-Vemulawada, K.Tarakarama Rao(TRS)-Sircilla, Tanneru Harish Rao (TRS)-Siddipet and D.Vinaya Bhaskar (TRS)- Warangal West. On Friday, three nominations were filed bringing the total number of nominations filed to nine.

Meanwhile, CPI(M) State executive members Y.Venkateswara Rao and S.Veeraiah submitted a memorandum to the CEO on Saturday seeking permission to highlight people's issues in the five districts.

They also criticised the binding over of six party and people's organisations leaders by district police as undemocratic.
