KOCHI: Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac, who holds additional portfolio of Public Works, said here on Saturday that the floor-area ratio (FAR) rules would be relaxed for those who surrender land free of cost for development of roads. He was briefing the media at the end of a review meeting of stakeholders and authorities concerned at the Government Guest House. Relocation The Minister pointed out that minimal land surrender/relocation of a few landowners was inevitable for widening of roads. “People shun visiting the city nowadays, fearing traffic snarls on narrow roads. The floor-area ratio (FAR) rules of buildings would be relaxed for those who surrender land free of cost. The relaxation would be transferable and saleable, as part of an innovative rehabilitation plan. Shopowners who surrender land can be rehabilitated in multi-storeyed shopping complexes built in the same street,” he said. Public works The State government would spend Rs.1,000 crore to widen and upgrade 19 major roads, to construct three flyovers and six railway overbridges in the city and its suburbs, Dr. Isaac said. Of this, a sum of Rs. 250 crore would be spent to compensate and rehabilitate people who surrender their land, Dr. Isaac said. The roads would be upgraded to Indian Roads Congress standards, the Minister said.
