NEW DELHI: Gayathri Govindaraj and Sidhanth Thingalaya bettered National junior records while winning silver medals in the Asian junior athletics championships in Hanoi on Saturday. Gayathri registered a jump of 13.58 metres, with an aiding wind of 1.91m/s, bettering her own junior National record of 13.39m in triple jump set at the Open National in Kochi earlier this year. The Tamil Nadu girl came behind Sun Yan of China who jumped 13.75m. She was just nine centimeters off Anju Bobby George's senior National record. Joylene Mural Lobo, the second Indian entry, finished sixth with 12.24m. Thingalaya clocked 13.96 seconds behind Chinese Taipei's Lee Yan Liu (13.90s) while winning the silver in the men's 110m hurdles. Both bettered the existing meet record. The Maharashtra youngster, who came second in the senior Federation Cup at Ranchi last May, is the first Indian junior to dip under 14 seconds in the event. India won two meals in men's discus, with Prabhjot Singh (54.13m) and Kirpal Singh (53.23m) taking the silver and bronze behind Syrian Mansor Hameed (56.25m). In the women's 100m hurdles, Gayathri, who was the favaourite, was disqualified for a false start. Hemasree Jaypal, another Indian, won the bronze, clocking in at 14.56s.
