Carcass of wild elephant found

Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA: The carcass of a wild tusker has been found in a putrefied condition in the forests near Kumbalathamon, close to Vadasserikkara, in the Ranni forest division.

Forest Department sources said the carcass was first sighted by a group of people living on the forest fringes on Sunday afternoon.

Local people had launched a search in the forest fringes as a foul smell had engulfed the entire area in the past two days. The forest officials at Ranni were alerted on finding the carcass.

Forest personnel from Ranni and Vadasserikkara inspected the site on Monday forenoon. Sources said the carcass was four or five days old and the tusks were intact.

An autopsy will be carried out on Tuesday and the carcass will be burnt in the forests.
