CHENNAI: The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Madras Medical College and Government General Hospital is organising essay and poetry competitions in view of Independence Day.

A press release said the Tamil competitions, open for students and public, is on the theme ‘Freedom from Illness.' The essay writing competition open for college students across the State can be on any aspect of positive lifestyle and diet that prevents diseases. Topics such as alcohol and tobacco use can also be discussed.

People from all walks of life can participate in the Tamil poetry competitions. The entries can be sent by post or in person to S.M. Chandramohan, Professor and Head, Surgical Gastroenterology, Room 245-B, 2nd Tower, 4th Floor, Government General Hospital, Chennai-600003 on or before July 20. The results will be announced in the first week of August. Prizes would be awarded at a function on Independence Day.
