CHENNAI: With the total strength of students in classes I -VIII in Chennai Schools yet to touch last year's figure in nine zones of Chennai Corporation, the Block Resource Teacher Educators (BRTE) of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) are working overtime to increase the enrolment.
They will be organising door-to-door visits to identify children in various parts of the city till August.
Basin Bridge is the only zone to show an increase in the number of students compared to last year. The total number of students in primary and middle schools in the zone is 3,357 as against 3,286 last year, said an official of the SSA.
Tondiarpet zone with 9,482 students is aiming to touch last year's figure of 9,569. Pulianthope zone has 9,242 students (last year it was 10,557), Ayanavaram 5,793 (6,073), Kilpauk 8,553 (9,743), Triplicane 2,795 students (2,982), Nungambakkam 3,288 (4,495), Kodambakkam 5,221 (5,464), Saidapet 10,236 (11,152) and Adyar 6,650 (7,208).
The total number of students in class I in Chennai Schools is 4,413 as against 5,304 last year.
