Madikeri: Two men were killed by a wild elephant near Kodlipet in Somwarpet taluk of Kodagu district, bordering Hassan district, one on Monday evening and the other on Tuesday morning. The man who died on Monday was identified as Revappa (50) from Hampapura village. The other man, believed to have been killed by the same elephant, was identified as Ramesh (25). Revappa had gone into the forest near the Hemavathy backwaters to graze sheep as usual on Monday. The sheep returned home, but Revappa did not. Residents of Hampapura, Kirikodli and surrounding villages, along with Forest Department staff, formed teams to search for Revappa on Monday evening. However, the next morning, Revappa's body was found near the forest. The search team spread out, and Ramesh, who had gone into the forest too, was also killed. He was from Kirikodli village. Madikeri MLA M.P. Appachu Ranjan expressed condolences to their families. Residents were furious with the Forest Department for not taking measures to control the elephant menace. Forest and police officials visited the villages on Tuesday morning.
