Road works target met: Corporation

Special Correspondent

SMOOTH RIDE:A road at Nava India in the city that was laid ahead of the World Classical Tamil Conference.

COIMBATORE: Except one ongoing work, the Coimbatore Corporation has completed all the road works before the World Classical Tamil Conference, Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra said on Wednesday.

“We have completed all the works on the 76 roads [totally 71 km] targeted for improvement ahead of the conference. The work on the Rangavilas Mill Road [a scheme road] alone is in progress and will be completed soon,” he said.

The State Government had sanctioned Rs.26 crore from the Infrastructure and Amenities Fund of the Local Planning Authority to lay three scheme roads: Nava India Road, Masakalipalayam Road and Rangavilas Mill Road. A sum of Rs.13 crore had been set aside for these.

The Nava India Road project was meant to connect Avanashi Road with 100 Feet Road.

This included a bridge across the Sanganur Canal near the S.N.R. Sons College.

The Commissioner said this road was of immense benefit to people heading for Avanashi Road from areas north of the city along Sathyamangalam Road and Mettupalayam Road.

The recently completed project provided an alternative route to reach Peelamedu. So far, one had to come through Gandhipuram or the Avanashi Road Flyover and cover a considerable stretch of Avanashi Road to reach Peelamedu.

Now, people could take 100 Feet Road and touch Avanashi Road at Nava India. “One can save 10 to 15 minutes and 2 km on travel now by taking this route,” the Commissioner said.

More importantly, this scheme road helps in decongesting at least 5 km to 6 km of Avanashi Road and the Gandhipuram area.

“We have completed all the major works. Some minor works to repair interior roads will be carried out now. The Corporation will take up such works in areas such as Ramnagar,” he said.

Apart from these, road works would be taken up in areas where underground sewers were being laid. “As and when the drainage works are completed, we will take up the road works,” he said.

On other infrastructure works, the Commissioner said finishing touches were being given to the pedestrian pavements on Tiruchi Road and State Bank Road.

The 20 mobile toilets put up on Avanashi Road during the conference and the rally would be re-located according the need in various areas in the city.

The Commissioner said 20 more such toilet units would be purchased by the Corporation in order to maintain hygiene in the busy areas of the city.
