Food security

This has reference to the article by P. Sainath on the lack of food security (July 6). India is known for its poor health status. `Malnourished' and `hungry' are the adjectives used for Indian children. High social spending is the need of the hour.

It is not only the question of supply of food grains at affordable rates. It is also the problem of growing them in adequate quantities. The government's decision to increase the fuel prices will further increase the woes of the common man as more agricultural land will go under the cultivation of plants such as jatropha and rapeseed. Maize, sugarcane and palm oil will be diverted to lucrative bio-fuels, thereby making food items costlier.

The article exposes the nexus between the elitist media and hypocritical politicians. Their never-ending manipulation to deprive the poor of their right will spell doom for all. Policymakers will do well to realise that empty stomachs give birth to revolutions, often violent.

Universalising the public distribution system, despite its benefits, will increase government expenditure substantially. Besides, the scheme will become a goose that will lay the golden egg for those who operate it as they can easily fool the people. Manipulation of accounts and malpractices such as selling of subsidised stock in the open market will become rampant. Universalisation without a proper back-up plan will fail.
