Facilities-based grading of schools planned

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government proposes to go in for grading of government and private aided schools on the basis of the facilities available in them, Education Minister M.A. Baby told the Assembly on Wednesday.

Responding to a calling attention motion from A.P. Anil Kumar (Congress), the Education Minister said the government would begin the process with government schools and later extend it to private aided schools.

The government would also chalk out an extensive scheme to construct toilets in all government and aided schools, he added.

Mr. Baby said there were 49 government and 209 private aided schools that did not have lavatories, 66 government and 195 aided schools that did not have toilets and 70 government and 120 aided schools that did not have drinking water supply facilities.

The government proposed to address this problem with the help of the three-tier local bodies, the Education Minister said.

He said efforts by the present government had resulted in construction of 7,784 toilets for boys and 3,972 toilets for girls, 6,727 drinking water supply units and 6,019 additional classrooms. The situation was still very shocking with several schools both in the public and private sectors not having toilet facilities, Mr. Baby said.

Rebate

Industries Minister Elamaram Karim said in response to a calling attention motion from C.K.P. Padmanabhan (CPI-M) that the government would soon take decision on the proposal that an additional 10 per cent rebate should be given to the khadi industry to compensate for the withdrawal of subsidy by the Centre with effect from April 1. The State government had submitted a memorandum to the Centre through MPs from the State on the subject.

He had also personally taken up the matter with the Union Minister for Rural Development, Mr. Karim said.
