Allow Parvathiammal to undergo treatment, says High Court

Special Correspondent

The petitioner had sought direction to the Centre to never deport passengers from abroad with a valid visa

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Wednesday said Parvathiammal, mother of the LTTE leader V. Prabakaran, should be allowed to undergo medical treatment in India whenever she expressed her willingness to do so.

Passing orders on a petition by R. Karuppan of Royapettah, a Division Bench, comprising Justices Elipe Dharma Rao and K.K. Sasidharan, said whenever the representative of Parvathiammal intimates the Indian High Commission in Colombo that she is willing to undergo treatment in India, the authorities should allow her to undergo treatment in the country.

All other contentions raised by the petitioner are left open to be decided in appropriate proceedings, the Bench said.

The petitioner had stated that the Centre should immediately invite Parvathiammal to visit Chennai for treatment by providing her a special plane from Malaysia.

He had also sought a direction to the Centre to never deport passengers from abroad with a valid visa, and to bear Parvathiammal's entire medical bills “to mitigate the harm done to her.”

The petitioner said on April 16 when she flew from Kuala Lumpur to Chennai with a valid passport and visa for medical treatment, she was not allowed to disembark.

Parvathiammal was kept in the aircraft and sent back.
