Tirunelveli
Examining:Collector M. Jayaraman evaluating the performance of weeder equipment at Tharuvai near Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli on Thursday. TIRUNELVELI: Collector M. Jayaraman evaluated the performance of the newly introduced weeder equipment in the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) paddy fields at Tharuvai near here on Thursday. The mechanised weeder, using petrol as its fuel, has replaced the hitherto used cono-weeder in the SRI paddy fields and has the capacity to cover a minimum of four to six acres a day, saving a lot of money and time for the farmer. Mr. Jayaraman said the district administration had planned to bring 13,800 hectares under SRI technique during the current ‘kar' paddy season while the target for the district for the current fiscal was 36,800 hectare, including 2,300 hectares in Palayamkottai taluk. “As the weeds are converted into organic manure in the SRI method when we use either cono-weeder or the mechanised weeder and new roots originate in bunches from the plant, the yield increases phenomenally. The district recorded the yield of 15,875 kg paddy per hectare in the SRI method during last year. Buoyed by this result, we've transformed Puliyarai and Paimpozhil into SRI villages as this revolutionary technique has been adopted in all paddy fields in these two villages. Paddy cultivation in the entire district will be covered under SRI method in near future,” said Mr. Jayaraman. Joint Director, Department of Agriculture, S. Subramanian accompanied the Collector.
