BHUBANESWAR: Pabitra Mohan Mohanty of the Steel City of Rourkela emerged as the champion in the just concluded 17 {+t} {+h} State-level Makhanlal Haldar Memorial Open Chess Tournament hosted in the pilgrims' paradise of Puri. Though Mohanty and runners up Soumya Ranjan Mishra shared 8.5 points each, the former won through the tie-breaker in the 10 {+t} {+h} round and walked away with the title, the trophy and a cash award of Rs.8,000. The runners up received a trophy and a cash award of Rs.6, 000. The rest of the top 10 rank holders of the tournament in order included Rajendra Kumar Sahoo (Bhubaneswar); KrishnanSoni (Nayagarh); Siddhant Mohapatra (Bhadrak); Manas Ranjan Parida (Bhadrak); Bibhuti Bhusan Das (Puri); Mohmmaed Asraf (Cuttack); Subharansu Mohan Satapathy (Bhubaneswar) and Sumit Kumar Banarjee (Puri). Former Assembly Speaker Maheswar Mohanty presented the awards.
