Opposition walkout over ‘unspent' funds

Special Correspondent

Non-utilisation of 690 cr. provided under Centre's National Rural Health Mission

Non-utilisation of funds due to late release by Centre, says Health Minister D. Nagender

Rosaiah attributes it to lack of paramedical staff and doctors at the primary health centres

HYDERABAD: Members of the Telugu Desam, CPI, CPI(M) and the BJP walked out of the Assembly on Friday protesting against non-utilisation of Central funds to the tune of Rs. 690 crore provided under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) while those of Praja Rajyam and Lok Satta registered their resentment.

TDP raises issue

The issue figured through a question tabled by two TDP members T. Vanitha and K. Lalitha Kumari.

Health Minister D. Nagender attributed the non-utilisation of funds to late release by the Centre and unsatisfactory spending by Village Health & Sanitation Committees and Hospital Development Committees.

Intervening, Chief Minister K. Rosaiah said it was also due to non-availability of adequate paramedical staff and doctors at the primary health centres (PHCs).

Recruitment soon

A notification would be issued in three days to recruit 2,425 doctors and paramedical staff.

Naidu flays State

Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu criticised the government for neglecting the healthcare of the poor by not spending available funds while D. Narendra (TDP) quoted the Comptroller and Auditor-General's report to point out lapses in implementation of National Rural Health Mission.

Mr. Naidu said the State government was pleading lack of funds even for whitewashing State-run hospitals while parting with huge sums to corporate hospitals under Arogyasri.

Minister's claim

The Health Minister said it was the Congress government which increased the health budget to Rs. 3,800 crore last year and to Rs. 4,200 crore this year.

Expressing his ire at what he called “irresponsible reply by the Minister,” Mr. Naidu led his members out.
