Vijay and Parry's clinch lead

CHENNAI: Vijay and Parry's clinched the first-innings lead in difficult circumstances, as the TNCA first-division cricket league's opening round concluded here on Friday.

Vijay's number eight, R.D. Ashwin Kumar, made 77 and put on 87 for the ninth wicket with J. Koushik to guide his side, struggling on 174 for eight, past Falcon's 204. Left-arm seamer Prashanth Parameswaran's six-wicket haul went in vain for IOB, as Parry's, thanks to a 22-run stand between M.O. Arjun Sarathy and S. Senthil Kumar, earned a five-run lead.

Last season's runner-up, Grand Slam, held off Indian Bank, finishing on 179 for nine in response to Bank's 420. Off-spinner K. Bharat Shankar, who claimed four wickets, was responsible for Grand Slam's slide. The sides shared the points.

Garry Dumenil's all-round effort (four for 97 and 51) couldn't prevent Jolly Rovers from taking the first-innings lead against Alwarpet. B. Vijay Rahul (50), S. Vasanth Saravanan (69), and captain J. Hariesh (64 n.o.) also contributed half-centuries for Alwarpet but their side fell 91 runs short of Rovers' 388.

At SRMC, half-centuries from M. Praveen Srivatsan (73), S. Vidyut (51), V. Subramania Siva (53), and Wilkins Victor (53 n.o.) helped Young Stars secure the first-innings lead and five points against Aruna.

Globe Trotters suffered a collapse against India Pistons, crashing to 87 all out after M.R. Shrinivas claimed four wickets. But the size of Trotters' first-innings lead and a spirited bowling effort kept the side from defeat and ensured five points.

The scores : At RKM-Viveka: Indian Bank 420 in 141.4 overs (B. Indrajith 144, E. Suresh 70, P. Satish 65, V. Arun Kumar five for 107) drew with Grand Slam 179 for nine in 88 overs (K. Bharath Shankar four for 40). Points: IB 3, GS 3.
