KOCHI: Goalkeepers are always at the mercy of rival players in a tiebreaker but things were very different at the Ernakulam Press Club's Vodafone inter-media ‘Shootout Hungama' at the Maharaja's Stadium here on Saturday. With the organisers setting up a much smaller handball-type goal post for the football event, goalkeepers dominated the day and came up with some dramatic saves. Goalkeeper C.S. Baiju turned out to be the hero as Amrita TV won the title and a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 defeating Mangalam daily 2-1 in the final. Manorama News beat Asianet News, via the sudden death, and finished runner-up. Nearly 150 media persons, many of them in Brazilian and German colours, turned out for the day-long event. Dominic Presentation, MLA and former Kerala Sports Minister who kicked off the event, said the tournament brought back memories of the tie between Kerala journalists and the visiting media nearly 30 years ago during the Nehru Cup international tournament. Amrita TV's C.S. Baiju was adjudged as the best goalkeeper and Amjod Varghese of Manorama News won the prize for the best strike. Actor Kailash and former football international C. C. Jacob gave away the prizes. Bhagath Soccer Club and Punjab National Bank were associated with the Ernakulam Press Club in organising the event. Unni scalps seven At Thiruvananthapuram, Murugan CC grabbed the honours on the first day against Pankajakasturi XI in the two-day Thiruvananthapuram district ‘A' division cricket league here on Saturday. Medium-pacer Krishnan Unni (seven for 37) wrecked Pankajakasturi innings which flattered to deceive after a promising start. H. Rahul top-scored with 65 as Pankajasturi scored 235 in the first innings. Murugan ended the day on a strong note, scoring 87 for one in 20 overs. The scores: Pankajakasturi 235 in 67.4 overs (H. Rahul 65, Shanu S. Kumar 44, Krishnan Unni seven for 37) vs. Murugan CC 87 for one in 20 overs (Sajikumar 44 batting) . St. Albert's triumphs Ernakulam's St. Albert's School blanked St. Peter's School, Kadayiruppu, 3-0 and won the Vision India-Kerala's Ernakulam district-level football tournament, jointly organised by the Ernakulam District Sports Council and the Ernakulam District Football Association as part of their World Cup celebrations, at the Maharaja's Stadium here on Saturday evening. S. Akhil (8th minute), Ananthu (15th) and Arjun (19 {+t} {+h}) scored the goals.
