On the warpath: Farmers staging a demonstration at Pollachi on Saturday.
Pollachi: Hundreds of farmers under the Parambikulam – Aliyar Project staged a demonstration here on Saturday in protest against the release of water to Uppar Dam in Dharapuram region from the Thirumurthy reservoir contrary to the norms.
The agitators were led by Medical K Paramasivam, president of the Thirumurthy Reservoir Irrigation Scheme Association.
The demonstrators protested against the release of nearly 500 cusecs of water for seven days
Agreement
They said that the Parambikulam – Aliyar Project agreement maintained that water could be released only in the event of surplus storage in PAP reservoirs and torrential downpour, whereas the Madras High Court had given a ruling that water should be released only for drinking water purposes and not for coconut farms or cattle.
