‘Football is sinful'

Clergy in the Dutch Calvinist “Bible Belt” from Zeeland to Overijssel have confirmed the usual Sunday television ban even though the Netherlands is playing in the World Cup final against Spain in the evening in South Africa.

The preacher in the town of Elburg has even prayed for a Dutch defeat in response to plans by three local watering holes to open for the final.

Octopi off limits

United States-based Spanish chef Jose Andres has expressed his gratitude to Paul, Germany's renowned ‘psychic' octopus, by removing all octopi from the menu of his three Jaleo Tapas restaurants until further notice.

Paul has so far been accurate in all his predictions of Germany games, including its semifinal defeat against Spain. Now the cephalopod has also predicted Spain will beat the Netherlands in the final.

Andres himself will not be in his Washington restaurant for the big match — he will be at the stadium in Johannesburg.

Invitation spells trouble

Encouraged by its successful staging of the World Cup, South Africa is contemplating bidding for the Olympics.

To that end, President Jacob Zuma met with IOC President Jacques Rogge on Saturday. Embarrassingly, however, the official invitation for the press conference called the IOC chief Jacques Roggers instead.
