Coimbatore: Lawyers practising in sessions and sub-ordinate judiciary courts in Coimbatore have decided to suspend their court boycott agitation and resume work from July 12. They have been staging agitations since June 30 demanding the arrest of Muthu Palaniappan, a constable, for having allegedly assaulted Kalaiarasan, a lawyer, on June 29 at Pappanaickenpalayam. Following a complaint, the city police registered a case against the constable under six sections of Indian Penal Code. On June 30, the lawyers demanding that the constable should be arrested and remanded for the charge under section 506 (ii) of Indian Penal Code for criminal intimidation picketed the Police Commissioner's office and squatted on the road. On July 1, they formed a human chain and on July 2 they took out a procession. The lawyers also met the Chief Justice of Madras High Court in this connection. From June 30, they have been abstaining from the courts. Two rounds of talks held with the lawyers by the District Judge and the district officials remained inconclusive. On July 9, the general body meeting of the Bar as well as criminal lawyers resolved to suspend the court boycott agitation till July 16 and resume work. A decision on the further course of action would be taken on July 16, sources in the legal fraternity said.
