State announces fixed day services for family planning

BHUBANESWAR: In a bid to stabilise population growth, the State government on Sunday announced every Monday as “Parivar Kalyan Diwas” which emphasised on providing fixed day services for family planning. “It will ensure that our range and reach of services meeting the needs of every eligible couple, even in the remotest parts of the State,” said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik while addressing State-level function to celebrate World Population Day-2010 here.

“Orissa has a fertility level below national average. However, we should not feel content with this figure. This realisation comes from the fact that about half of our population is below 24 years, who are now entering the reproductive age. There is, therefore, a huge challenge before us to expand our service delivery to meet family planning needs of these young people,” Mr. Patnaik said. He said, “we have to ensure safer, informed and rewarding growing-up process for all adolescents in our State.

I expect Education and Health department to join hands for school health education so as to integrate health education for adolescents in formal curriculum.”

Speaking on the occasion, Health Minister Prasanna Acharya said the State with a population of close to 4 crore also needed to be looked at for population stabilisation measures. “If not controlled today with adequate measures, it may lead to multiple problems relating to population explosion and acute shortage of resources,” Mr. Acharya said. State Health Secretary Anu Garg also sopke.
