HYDERABAD: Strident demands for the Ranga Reddy district to be declared as a Special Horticultural Zone marked the District Review Committee meeting held here on Sunday. Earlier, proposals towards such declaration, made in the Assembly and discussed at the district-level meetings, were evoked by the legislators who demanded a statement by Minister Ponnnala Lakshmaiah to this effect. Noting that the twin cities are not getting even 30 per cent of their vegetables from the district, Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah accepted the proposal for Special Horticultural Zone and promised to take up farm ponds in a large scale. Earlier, reacting to District Collector M. Dana Kishore's statement about plans to increase the acreage as well as yield of vegetable crop from the district, MLC K. Nageshwar sought to know the status of proposals for setting up of Special Horticultural and Agricultural Zones. MLA Harishwar Reddy noted that there was a need for more farm ponds in view of the proposals for expansion of vegetable crop. While the district has about 8,000 ponds dug manually, there is a need to increase the number by employing machinery, he said.
