Delay in vacating VOC Park grounds irks AIADMK

Special Correspondent

Party has announced demonstration on July 13

Coimbatore: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) functionaries on Saturday expressed displeasure over the delay in vacating the VOC park grounds.

The VOC Park grounds was under the control of the World Classical Tamil Conference organising committee for the preparation of the “Iniyavai Narpathu”, floats for the procession on the inaugural day of the meet on June 23. The authorities commenced the removal of the sheds from the very next day and the work is still in progress.

Meanwhile, the AIADMK announced that a demonstration would be staged condemning the increase in the prices of petroleum products and inflation on July 13. The AIADMK functionaries had remitted the necessary charges for utilising the grounds on July 8 itself.

On July 10, former AIADMK Ministers S.M. Velusamy and K.A. Sengottayan, who came to the grounds to oversee the arrangements for the demonstration, were visibly upset as the sheds were not removed completely. They took very strong objection to the delay in vacating the grounds and termed it a “deliberate attempt” to spoil the arrangements.

The former Ministers phoned up the officials demanding that the place should be vacated at the earliest, failing which they threatened to take the issue to the streets in the form of democratic protests.

However, revenue officials and the police intervened and assured them that the works would be completed soon.
