KOTTAYAM: Students should focus on the betterment of the society, according to R. Madhavan Nair, former ISRO chairman.

He was speaking at a civic reception accorded to him by various organisations here on Monday.

“In addition to developing a scientific temper, students should have a vision of the scope of their work in the present context. This can be supplemented by the giant strides made in the field of Information Technology. As a result, their efforts will gradually lead to the development of the country,” Dr. Madhavan Nair said.

He also advocated the importance of developing a thirst for knowledge among students. “Students should be assisted in developing ideas. These ideas will have a multiplying effect. As history has proven, it is ideas that have often led to an avalanche of results,” observed Dr. Nair.

During the interactive session that followed the function, Dr. Nair reminisced about the earlier days of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). “We had to face many setbacks during the beginning. However, we could not let these defeats affect our mission. Mistakes were converted into the stepping-stones for success. As a result, we have reached a position where our indigenous space technology can be placed on a par with the best in the world,” said Dr. Nair.

In his inaugural address, former judge of the Supreme Court, K.T. Thomas remarked that the achievements of Dr. Nair should be perceived as a major contribution towards the nation. Jose K. Mani, MP, said that Dr. Nair has become a role model for the students of science and technology. V.N. Vasavan, MLA, pointed out that the achievements of Dr. Nair are etched in the minds of the Indian youth. C. Abraham Itticheria, chairman, Reception Committee said that the benefits of Dr. Nair's efforts are not limited within the country.

Kottayam panchayat president T.N. Ramesan, Municipal chairperson Bindu Santhosh Kumar, Prof. Jacob Kurian Onattu, Principal, Baselius College, Fr. Thomas Puthussery, Director, Darsana Cultural Centre and T. Sasikumar, Secretary, Kottayam Public Library attended the function.
