Left-handers and off-spinners shine

CHENNAI: Left-handed batsmen and off-spinners profited on the opening day of the second round of the TNCA first-division cricket league.

Young Stars' M. Praveen Srivatsan and Grand Slam's Hemang Badani scored centuries, while Vijay's R. Ashwin and India Pistons' M. Prabhu claimed five wickets each.

Twenty-year-old Praveen Srivatsan (115, 252b, 17x4) added 130 for the second wicket with another left-hander, S. Vidyut, who scored 72, as Young Stars finished on 273 for four against Falcon.

Badani made an unbeaten 106 (151b, 15x4, 2x6) and raised 192 for the fourth wicket with K. Shree Vasudeva Das, also left-handed, to rescue Grand Slam from 87 for three. Although Vasudeva Das fell four short of a century, last season's runner-up ended Monday on 290 for four against Parry's.

Defending champion Jolly Rovers was also in trouble, falling to 126 for five at one stage, before the left-handed J. Syed Mohammed (83 batting, 154b, 18x4, 1x6) guided the side to 282 for seven. Aruna off-spinner P. Sakthi claimed three wickets.

Ashwin claimed all the five IOB wickets to fall at IC-Guru Nanak. Amit Pathak (55) and Rohan Prem (60) contributed to IOB's score of 236.

Prabhu (five for 70) was instrumental in Pistons dismissing Alwarpet for 226.

Wicketkeeper R. Karthik Aditya had a profitable time behind the stumps, collecting four dismissals, including a stumping. P. Hariraj (63) and captain J. Hariesh (77) made half-centuries for Alwarpet.
