Weightlifting
NEW DELHI: Weightlifter Seepani Yamini has been suspended for two years for an anti-doping rule violation. The National Anti-Doping Disciplinary panel suspended Yamini for two years from the date of sample collection (October 10, 2009) for having tested positive for steroid stanozolol in an out-of-competition test. During her hearing on May 5 last, Yamini had contended that she was prescribed certain medicines by a doctor employed with the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Bangalore. The Andhra lifter admitted that she had been taking proteins and creatine. She could not explain how stanozolol had got into her system. The doctor concerned denied, on phone, having prescribed such medicines. Doubts were raised by the panel Chairman, Jasmeet Singh, about the mention of “sample not being as per standard” as mentioned in the doping control form by the Doping Control Officer (DCO). The discrepancy pertained to pH and specific gravity of the sample. On a query from the panel, the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) explained that pH would not have any effect on the analysis and specific gravity was within acceptable limits.— Special Correspondent
