ELURU: The maize seed farmers staged a dharna at the collectorate and the office of the Joint Director, Agriculture department, here on Thursday under the aegis of the Andhra Pradesh Rytu Sangham demanding action against a multinational seed company which deceived them. They demanded a compensation of Rs 34,000 per acre from the company for the losses they suffered. According to the rytu sangham district president B. Balaram, the company motivated around 400 farmers from Krishna, Khammam, East and West Godavari districts to develop the maize foundation seed with a promise for 10 quintals of yield per acre. The company also gave the farmers male and female seeds for crossing. But the crossing failed to take place for want of male pollen in some areas, while in some areas the female seed reportedly lacked receptive power in spite of the availability of male pollen, which all resulted in hampering of seed production. The farmers invested Rs 30,000 per acre for seed multiplication but failed to reap not more than two quintals as against the company's promise for 10 quintals, Mr. Balaram said.
