NABARD credit for 500 maize farmers

Tuticorin: To increase production and productivity under maize cultivation in Tuticorin, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has launched a unique programme called Activity Based Groups (ABGs) on pilot basis at Pasuvanthanai village, which is attached to Ottapidaram block.

Under this programme, around 500 small and marginal farmers would be formed into 100 Joint Liability Groups and credit linkage would be provided through banks in its service area, M.R. Natarajan, District Development Manager, NABARD, said while inaugurating the programme on Monday.

He stressed the need for integrated efforts from farmers, banks, insurance companies, line departments of District Administration, Agricultural Universities and other resource support organisations. Besides credit linkages, the scheme would envisage soil testing, supply of quality seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, agricultural implements, judicious water management, crop insurance, technology transfer, extension support and provide market information.

The programme was attended by V. Louis Rajarathinam, Joint Director, Department of Agriculture; Jawahar, Professor and Head, Agriculture Research Station, Kovilpatti; Deivanakayam, Regional Manager, Pandyan Grama Bank, Tuticorin; and Senthamizh Selvi, Special Officer, Tuticorin District Central Cooperative Bank, Jalaaludin, Deputy Registrar, Kovilpatti.

The programme was coordinated by Shanmuga Mallusamy of Veerapandia Kattabomman Farmers' Club and Mohan Raj, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Ottapidaram.
