Arrangements complete for ‘Anayoottu'

FEAST FOR ELEPHANTS:Coconuts being readied at Sree Vadakkunnatha Temple in Thrissur on Thursday for the ‘Anayoottu' and the ‘Ashta Dravya Maha Ganapathy Homam' to be held there on Saturday.

Thrissur: As many as 60 elephants will be fed at the annual ‘Anayoottu' (feast for elephants) being held at the Sree Vadakkunnatha Temple on Saturday.

Temple melsanti (chief priest) Kottampilly Narayanan Namboodiri will offer rice balls to the youngest elephant of the lot to kick off the event. The elephants will be given a mix of rice, bananas, jaggery, honey, corn, pineapple and sugarcane.

Arrangements are complete for ‘Anayoottu', according to its organisers. Barricades have been erected at the Thekkinkad Maidan for ‘Anayoottu'.The event attracts thousands of spectators every year.

The Sree Vadakkunatha Kshetra Kshema Samithy, which organises the event, has decided to insure the event for Rs. 1 crore. Priests led by thanthri Puliyannur Sankaranarayanan Namboodiri will perform ‘Ashtadravya Maha Ganapati Homam' (offering holy material in sacrificial fire to propitiate Lord Ganesa) the same day. About 10,000 coconuts, 2,000 kg of jaggery, 1,000 kg of rice flakes, 200 kg of ghee, 50 kg of honey, sugarcane and sesame will be used for the ‘Homam'.

The events are a part of observance of special religious ceremonies in the Malayalam month of Karkkidakam (July 17-August 16).
