Case against doctor for taking bribes

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: A doctor in the Women and Children's Hospital here is facing a Vigilance probe after complaints from patients that he was demanding bribes for administering anaesthesia to patients before surgeries.

The episode came to light when the doctor allegedly demanded Rs.500 from the relatives of a woman who was about to have a caesarian surgery. The relatives had only Rs.300 with them, but the doctor allegedly did not agree to settle for that sum. The issue snowballed into an argument and several other patients, who also reportedly had to face similar situations, joined in. Meanwhile, the Vigilance department was alerted. However, by the time Vigilance sleuths reached the hospital, the doctor had entered the operation theatre. Since there was no direct evidence to take action against the doctor, Vigilance officials registered a case based on the complaints from the patients and have initiated a probe. District Medical Officer K.M. Sirabuddin and the hospital superintendent too were informed by the Vigilance officials.

The DMO said he had received no complaints directly from the patients, and hence, he could not take any action.
