NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Environment and Forests claims that it was not aware of the order quashing the environmental clearance for the proposed thermal power project at Sompeta in Andhra Pradesh as the National Environment Appellate Authority is an autonomous body. “I don't know anything about that,” Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh said on Thursday. Instead, the Ministry issued its own order suspending the clearance for the project “in view of the unfortunate incident that took place at Sompeta on Wednesday.” It has asked the Regional Chief Conservator of Forests, Bangalore to carry out a site inspection. Once his report is submitted, the Ministry's Expert Appraisal Committee will reconsider the matter.
