MANGALORE: Doctors belonging to the district unit of the Indian Medical Association staged a protest here on Thursday to coincide with similar protests held by members of the association across the country.

The protest was against the scrapping of the Medical Council of India, the introduction of bachelor's degree in Rural Medical Sciences by the Union Government and the Private Medical Establishment Act by the State Government.

President of the district unit of the association Anaiah Kulal said that the MCI had contributed a lot to the Indian healthcare for the last 85 years. Referring to the scam involving the former MCI president Ketan Desai, he said, “If some persons are found to be guilty of doing something wrong, then punish them and not the entire institution.”

About the three-year medical degree for rural medical professionals, Mr. Kulal said that it was an attempt to create two grades of doctors, one for the urban population and another for the rural population. “The rural people also deserve first class healthcare why dump them with sub-standard medical professionals,” he said.

The Private Medical Establishments Act was a tool to harass doctors, he said and pointed out that none of the Government-run institutions could pass the stringent guidelines laid down by the Act.
