COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA) will once again request the State Government to raise the low tension (LT) limit from 150 HP to 250 HP. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, M. Kandhaswami, president, CODISSIA, said small and medium industries (SMEs) that wanted to increase production capacity were unable to do so because of the limit and if increased, they fell into the HT category and thereby paid heavily for the power consumed. Most SMEs could not afford such a heavy power tariff, he said and appealed to the State Government to consider the association's demand. There were around a 1,000 industries that were waiting for the Government's decision to carry out expansion because even the slightest of expansion put industries in the HT category, he explained. Mr. Kandhaswami, who has been recently elected president, said CODISSIA eagerly awaited the skill development programme the Government of India proposed to conduct. Labour shortage To meet the labour shortage in industries, the Ministry of Micro, Medium and Small Enterprises had come up with the programme wherein those who had passed class eight would be trained for a week in a variety of trades. As and when the training programme got under way, it was expected to fill the 50,000-odd vacancies in the industries, he said. The president also spoke on the association's efforts to help industries easily avail of the credit-linked capital subsidy scheme and the State Government's subsidy for generator sets.
